I first tried Crossfit in 2007 and I was immediately hooked. In 2009 I received my Crossfit Level 1 certificate and began coaching and I’ve been doing it ever since. What drew me into Crossfit so quickly was the struggle of each work out and the camaraderie that environment builds. Those are my two favourite aspects of Crossfit, the challenge of each work out and the community that is built from it. Crossfit is unique in its ability to bring people together, people that otherwise wouldn't have crossed paths. We experience the same struggle, sweat the same, occasionally bleed, and always use more chalk than we need. This to me is Crossfit.

My favorite parts of being a coach are the high energy situations. When someone gets their first muscle up or a big PR it turns the gym electric and everyone can feel that. I love the bond formed by coaching athletes through the open and competitions. I like seeing people continually push to improve themselves. Effort is something I really appreciate, whether it's the long term consistency to get that first muscle up or snatch PR, or someone trying to squeeze out those last few reps before the end of a WOD. I look forward to the transformation of someone who is new to crossfit, seeing what 6 months or a year of training does to that person’s confidence, health, fitness, and overall quality of life.

I am thankful to do what I love, and I’m grateful to do it with my amazing wife Jane and family.

My passion for sports began at a young age with gymnastics. I was involved in the sport for about 10 years as an athlete and a coach. I worked with high performance level athletes preparing them for competitions physically, mentally and emotionally. Before I found CrossFit, I became a personal trainer where I got to work with clients one on one helping them achieve their goals and improve their lifestyle. I was introduced to CrossFit in 2012 and never looked back. I fell in love with the concept of CrossFit – functional fitness, constantly varied, performed at high intensity. Most importantly I fell in love with the community. Since 2012, I have been a crossfitter and a coach. In 2016 I had the opportunity to participate in the West Regional as a team member of the CrossFit Currie Barracks. I will always cherish this experience.

The part that I enjoy about coaching is the ability to connect and build a community of like-minded people around you. It is this community of people that pushes you to be a better athlete and a better coach. As a coach, my passion lies in teaching people how to execute movement with virtuosity – “performing the common uncommonly well”. It allows people to improve their posture, rehab from an injury or prevent injury all together. It goes without saying that watching people learn new skills and achieve their goals is inspiring and rewarding.

I grew up as a "jack of all sports, and a master of none.”  I played basketball, softball, volleyball and rock climbing until I graduated, then activity fell by the wayside. In 2008 I first became aware of Crossfit and was interested, but figured there was no way I'd ever be in good enough shape to participate in it. Five years later, I realized that the only thing that wasn't ready to try Crossfit was my mind - that Crossfit could work for everyone and I joined a gym in 2013.

As soon as I walked into the gym, I was welcomed into a community.  I quickly found myself not only building strength and learning new skills, but also finding friendships. I connected with people I would have never met were it not for sharing a barbell or a post workout high-fives.

It excites me to see members of the community develop their potential, increasing their strength, skills, and athleticism.  Whether your goal is to do a single box jump, a three plate deadlift or carrying heavy groceries in one trip, I look forward to helping you get there.

I discovered Crossfit in 2010 and haven’t looked back.  After receiving my Level 1 certification in 2013, my Crossfit journey has brought me from Red Deer to Edmonton, Lloydminster and now Calgary.  What draws me to the Crossfit community is the like-mindedness of members; we look for excellence in a supportive and positive environment.  That’s exactly the environment I strive to achieve in every single class I coach.   I believe that if I can make your class the best hour of your day, it turns into the best hour of my day.

I am at my best when I can be part of someone’s journey to achieve their goal. From improving technique to reaching a personal best, I enjoy celebrating the success of an athlete.  As a curling coach for over 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of athletes, from those newly starting out to provincial champions.  My background of softball, dance, and competitive curling has taught me to place a high value on the day-to-day work that adds up to progress.

What makes Crossfit Sunalta so special is the welcoming and encouraging vibe right from the moment you walk in the door.  I am excited to be part of a team that takes care to provide intelligent, well-planned programming, along with a variety of additional programs that build on the foundations of Crossfit.  From gymnastics seminars, nutrition challenges, professional health industry guest speakers, and themed throw-downs, there is always something new to learn and experience!

Throughout my childhood and adolescence, I was obsessed with playing sports so I spent 95% of my free time doing just that. Fast forward to 2012; I completed my undergrad degree and a ski racing career on an athletic scholarship at the University of Alaska Anchorage.  After which I moved back to Calgary and found CrossFit. After attending my first Crossfit class, I was hooked!

In 2013, I had the opportunity to compete at the Crossfit Regionals as part of the CrossFit Calgary team. This was the beginning of my competitive career.  Since then, I have competed as an individual at the Crossfit Regionals in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2015, I was able to qualify for the Crossfit Games, which is an experience I cherish.

In 2013, I obtained my L1 CrossFit Certification and started coaching in my spare time.  In 2014, I started Law School in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2018, I was called to the Alberta Bar and officially became a lawyer. After three years of Law School and one year of Law Articles, I decided not to become a corporate lawyer, at least for now.

Given that I am still completely obsessed with sports, particularly CrossFit, I recently transitioned from the law/academic world. I now have a career coaching people full time in Nutrition and CrossFit. I realized that helping people improve their health and fitness is the most satisfying career path for me. My favourite part about coaching is the ability to play a part in helping people find confidence in their athletic abilities and build a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.   I am excited to do so at Crossfit Sunalta.

I have been a lifelong athlete and student of sport and performance. I grew up swimming and playing soccer at a high level which is where my passion for competition was born. After graduating university, I was in need of a new physical and competitive outlet. I found CrossFit in 2012 somewhat by accident but was hooked immediately. I was obsessed with the small improvements that could happen on a daily basis. The intensity and the community are what kept me coming back each day. I loved it so much, I began coaching in 2013. I competed at Regionals in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 and finally qualified for the CrossFit Games in 2018, which had been a goal of mine since I learned that the CrossFit Games were a thing!

What I enjoy most about coaching is seeing the little "ah-ha" moments happen. Watching movements and coaching cues click for people is extremely rewarding, because I remember what that feeling is like. I am very detail oriented and infatuated with movement, so I love to coach and refine movement. From the air squat to the muscle-up, there is always room for development. I appreciate effort more than anything, so if I see that someone is truly committed to the process of self improvement, I will go above and beyond to match that effort.

“How do we keep this kid from moving?!” is probably one of the things I heard the most while growing up. I would never get tired, which lead to being involved in every sport available through my early twenties. Then, as a “retired” footballing/track running/volleyballing/baseballing hobbyist, I had to focus on other endeavors. I found myself unhappy and out of shape.

Thankfully, I discovered CrossFit through my best friend during the Fall of 2012. She invited me to a class and I was immediately hooked! What drew me the most was the opportunity to share a learning path of innumerable new movements and techniques, and celebrating every moment of success with a supporting community.

During the winter of 2016, I received my Crossfit Level 1 certificate, motivated by the thought that I could give back to the community I’ve grown to love.  Coaching CrossFit has granted me the opportunity to motivate and accompany others in their journey towards a better self. It has made me feel tireless once again. Not for the sake of movement, like in my early days, but to see others achieve their health and fitness goals.

I believe CrossFit Sunalta embodies everything that made me fall in love with CrossFit as an athlete, and encourages all aspects needed to become a better coach. I look forward to spending time with fellow athletes, be it “fitnessing” with, or coaching them through the amazing programming we offer. My hope is that my efforts bring them one step closer to that milestone they want to accomplish in the future.
